Pages 1- 75 -

We have been reading for three nights now and tonight we are all going to put our thoughts on here.
As I have been reading I have found that this book flat out frustrates me. Does anyone else feel this way? I get extremely irritated by how Ralph treats the others, especially Piggy. The relationship between the two is a great example of just how mean kids can be. They were put on this island and are expected to survive. Maybe it is survival of the fittest but how can only one survive and leave the others behind? This must be the perfect example of how selfish our society is. Piggy to me symbolizes the thoughts and hurt that life has. He is always trying to help out and put forth an effort but no one accepts him. He is always being put down by Ralph and the others. Ralph symbolizes a ruler who may not deserve to be a ruler; he is like a dictator because he only listens to his thoughts and he is always right. I feel that they children are not organized and that something bad is going to happen. I did not understand the part with Simon and how he was painted up and watching the littluns. Does anyone get this and is it foreshadowing cannibalism? Overall, I think that the book will teach us a lot about society and how humans are so selfish.

I agree that there is a lot of foreshadowing, especially with Simon. I also lIke your thoughts about Piggy. He seems to be the voice of reason sometimes, but no one ever listens to him. I'm curious as to what will happen between Jack and Ralph since they seem to be kind of mad at
each other.

I also agree that this book is very frustrating because none of them seem to really care about what

happens to them. However, I disagree with your thoughts on Ralph because I think he actually wants to help the others, but they won't listen to him. -- Sara :)

Yeah, I agree with you both about Piggy and the foreshadowing aspect. Jack makes me angry because he seems like he thinks he's in charge because the boys follow him, and he thinks that hunting is pretty much the only important thing. I agree with Sara also, about Ralph. I think he's trying the hardest to help the boys get home. It's his idea to have a signal fire, but no one seems to want to take care of it. I agree about there being no organization. Everyone technically has a job though, they just don't necessarily do it, like I mentioned before with Jack. - Jes

75-175 -

In theses pages I think that Jack is completely crazy. The group thought that he would end up going insane and he did. Throughout the book my opinion of Ralph has changed and I see how is truly a good leader. Everyone's opinions on it swayed my view. There was a huge fight over the beast and the groups end up splitting into two. I think that the kids represent innocense and how people need help. The children talk about needing parents to rely on and how wise they are. This really made me think that it is very hard to go through life alone, everyone needs someone to talk to and get advice from. Piggy seems to be a symbol of the voice of reason and truth. He may have wild ideas about building a TV but he still seems to calm Ralph down. To Ralph the fire symbolized hope and a future with safetly and he really clings to that thought. I think it is crazy how Jack is leading his society and how barbaric they are. How could they just killl Simon? Does anyone understand why the book is called Lord of the Flies? This part was not a huge section in the book but it could really explain a lot. Overall I think that this book really shows how society could have taken so many different turns instead of how it turned out. I also believe that everyone has to make a choice everyday on how to live. What do you all think? Remember this is only to page 175.

IMPORTANT!! PLEASE WRITE DOWN WHAT YOU THINK A MAJOR THEME OF THE BOOK IS AND BRING IT INTO CLASS ON MONDAY! THIS IS PART OF THE FINAL PROJECT I THOUGHT OF. THANK YOU.

175 to the end -
I am completely shocked at how horrible Jack turned out to be. I never liked him from the beginning but he was just awful. I find it truly amazing how Ralph lived to be rescued because that is all he ever wanted. Why do you think that the children turned away from the way they were raised to act? I think that the wild just got to them and they thought they could do whatever. They did not feel they had any athuority over them so they did not listen to who ever tried to rule them. Jack only got people to be loyal to him because he was cruel and corrupt. How is it that the wrong person always seems to become the leader? Honestly I am having a hard time connecting this to society and what a major theme would be. Can you all help me? This will be really helpful in our final project that we will be working on on Monday. Please read the note above. I am truly struggling, I think that this connects to society because of how the children acted and how we have to have a choice. I maybe completely off so please give your input!
